Abstract: The traumatic experience of the helping professionals has always been an important theme in academic studies. The finding of surveys, which target at psychological counselors, health workers and social workers, has revealed the high occurrence of the helper’s traumatic experiences, including being abused and neglected, disease, death, separation and loss, etc.. From the perspective of psychodynamics, the roles which traumatic experiences play in shaping individual helping career preference include: making reparation to the unfulfilled psychological needs in one’s early life;satisfying the impaired narcissistic need; taking care of others for one’s own value; Having sensitive empathy with other’s pain, as well as identifying with the professional model. These findings will not only contribute to improvement of the Altruism-Born-of-Suffering theory, but also provide guidance to the training of helping professionals.
