Abstract: During the Imjin War period in 1592, Chosen Korean troops had been almost completely destroyed. The Ming court sent military forces to Chosen Korea to defend the Japanese invasion. The Ming Southerner troops trained by General Qi Jiguang with strict military discipline and combating bravely in battle, made a deep impression on the Chosen King. In order to rebuild quickly the army, the Chosen King bought Qi Jiguang’s New Treatise on Military Efficiency, set up Xunlian Dujian to train Korean soldiers, and hired the generals from the Ming southerner troops as teachers. In order to understand and to apply for Qi Jiguang’s training methods, the Chosen Korean officials used the book New Treatise on Military Efficiency as the blueprint. The Xunlian Dujian became the most important military establishment in the late 300s of the Chosen Dynasty and opened the way for the professionalization of the Korean troops. The spread of New Treatise on Military Efficiency and its influence on the military system in the late Chosen period shows that the exchange of East Asian Chinese books is not only limited to the ideological and cultural level, but to the political, military and social levels.
