Abstract: Childhood, as the initial stage in all individuals’ life, would exert a subtle influence on the values and norms of adults. Being a literature form of collective composition and an educational method, nursery rhymes not only reflected the physical and mental constrains on females imposed by the gender institutions, customs, values and power relationship in the society of patriarchy, but also prejudicially shaped the gender awareness of children in the way of admonition. The view that men were superior to women, the pattern of men outside home and women inside, and the gender discrimination, which all relied on the customs in every lives, existed in the processes of pregnancy, bearing, feeding,and education of the children in early twentieth century China and influenced their understanding about gender relations.Those nursery rhymes, which undisguisedly described the love story, revealed the ignorance to the sense of children protection in the traditional Chinese society. However, the idea of women liberation after later Qing Dynasty also emerged some nursery rhymes.
