The Mobility of Floating Population in the Chinese Development Zones under the Background of the Transition of Economy

Abstract: As a forefront of China's economc reform,openingup and industrialization,development zones attract China's huge rural floating population.However,due to a variety of policy and market barriers,the floating population in development zones rarely get settled hence fully urbanized.Behind economic urbanization of individual migrants is the persisted rural status of their family members.Firstly,based on a review of both Chinese and international literature,we analyze relevant economic and population data in order to explore the relationship between floating population and development zones.We found that the spatial distribution of floating population was closely related to the development and spatial pattern of development zones and development zones are important gathering places for floating population.Secondly,based on questionnaire and interview data collected in development zones in Hangzhou and Nanjing,we analyze employment status,dwelling status,mobility,and settlement intention of floating population.Finally,we put forward suggestions on how to improve the mobility of floating population.
