Abstract: The translations and recommendations of science nouns are the important content of the eastward transmission of western science in the late Qing Dynasty.From Japanese loanwords and the discussion of the translated terms to several terminological dictionaries,and to the confirmation of the humanistic and social science nouns of the Stated Compilation and Translation Bureau,the translations and recommendations of the humanistic and social science nouns had a significant impact on the cultural transmission and the linguistic functions in modern China.In the early period of the Republic of China,the Japanese loanwords and the discussion of the translated nouns attracted many intellectuals’ attention and participation.Whilst enlightening the humanistic and social science of modern China,it grew some degrees of consensus about the humanistic and social science nouns in the academic circles.In the middle period,textbooks,terminological dictionaries and translation works began to spread and popularize nouns in practical level,and it built up a special usage pattern which was strong in common sense,and weak in normative.In the later period,the Stated Compilation and Translation Bureau led to the interflow of the natural science and the humanistic and social science nouns.
